Nomadic artisans weave this Sumak kilim in Herat Province and the surrounding villages. According to local legend, the technique takes its name from the village of Sumak, which disappeared during a sandstorm in the 17th century. Its name has lived on through these traditional woven pieces. The dense Sumak technique gives the kilim exceptional durability, comparable to that of a hand-knotted rug. Its intense colours and distinctive patterns create a striking appearance. It can become a true centrepiece in country homes, farmhouses and holiday cottages.
