Lori rugs are exceptional hand-knotted works of art whose vibrant colours and ancient motifs evoke the traditions and timeless beauty of Iran’s nomadic culture.

Lori rugs are made in Lorestan Province in western Iran, nestled within the Zagros Mountains. The region is regarded as the geographical and cultural heartland of the Lori people. It has preserved the traditions of nomadic rug weaving for thousands of years, and Lori rugs reflect this refined craftsmanship, developed and perfected over centuries.

The Lori are one of Iran’s most significant nomadic peoples, traditionally living across the southern and western parts of the country. While the Qashqai speak a language belonging to the Turkic language family, the Lori preserve ancient Iranian linguistic and cultural traditions closely connected to the heritage of Persian civilisation. Modernisation and urbanisation have reduced the importance of migration, yet their art—especially rug weaving—remains a living part of their collective memory and identity.

Lori rugs represent exceptional quality within the world of hand-knotted rugs. Their knot density, ranging from 80,000 to as many as 150,000 knots per square metre, ensures both durability and rich detail. These rugs are not merely functional objects, but also hold aesthetic and cultural value. With their vibrant colours and varied motifs, Lori rugs convey both harmony with nature and ancient symbolism.

The two main types of Lori rugs are the nomadic Lori Behbehan and the urban Khorramabad variety. Nomadic rugs draw inspiration from the natural world, often featuring stylised plant and animal motifs. Their dominant vivid reds, deep blues and sunlit yellows evoke the vibrancy of the surrounding landscape. Made from wool, these rugs often bear the individual mark of their maker through a unique irregularity or deliberate asymmetry, offering clear evidence of authentic craftsmanship.

By contrast, rugs made in the city of Khorramabad are more structured, with a more restrained colour palette and cleaner compositions. Square forms and regular pattern arrangements reflect the calm order of an urban setting, while the decorative treatment of the fringes reveals the refinement of the craft and close attention to detail.

Lori rugs are far more than interior furnishings—they are carriers of identity, storytellers and heirs to the nomadic world. Each piece is a living cultural code, shaped by the lives, beliefs, dreams and surroundings of the women who weave it. Vibrant blues, radiant reds, emerald greens and deep browns seem to weave stories across the floor—stories that evoke not only the past, but also a sense of timelessness.
