The development of Ziegler rugs began with Ziegler & Co., an Anglo-Swiss company that established production in the Arak region of Iran in the 1870s. These finely crafted rugs became known for their soft colours and simple yet striking patterns. Their balanced designs suit both modern and classic interiors. Today, artisans produce new Ziegler-style rugs in Afghanistan, where they are often called Chobi rugs. The word “Chobi” means “wood” in Persian. It refers to the natural shades traditionally created with plant-based dyes.
