Sourcing rugs – an interview with Mr Jamal, director of Kabiri® Carpet
How do exceptional oriental rugs reach Kabiri Carpet in Budapest? Director Jamal reveals the secrets of sourcing, quality control and trust. He also discusses the hand-selected masterpieces that join the collection.
The success story of Kabiri Carpet continues on Krisztina Boulevard. The sale of the current stock runs until the end of March. Rug lovers, collectors and enthusiasts can now buy long-awaited pieces with discounts of up to 50–70%. We also learnt that a new collection will soon arrive. The shop needs to make room for it.
We asked the owner of Kabiri Carpet about his rug-sourcing trip.
Mr Jamal, how do you select the pieces for each collection? How long does the selection process take?
Every year, I fly to Afghanistan to source the finest oriental rugs directly. I spend around a month selecting and collecting pieces that meet every requirement.
I believe in verified quality from reliable sources. In practice, this means that I inspect every rug according to strict standards. I examine the knotting, dyeing, colour harmony and many other details. The selection process therefore requires time, care and close attention.
Because I maintain such high standards, we issue a certificate for every oriental rug purchased from us. This guarantees the quality of the products we sell.
Before completing a purchase, we usually go through a light-hearted process of negotiating the price. With one truly exceptional rug, it took an entire day before we finally agreed on the right amount.

In Eastern culture, bargaining is entirely normal and widely accepted. Western customers may find it less familiar. To answer your question, I am always willing to negotiate when possible. I therefore offer a small discount to those who choose to do so.
I also aim to maintain a broad selection of oriental rugs at all times. During every sourcing trip, I make sure to purchase enough stock of the popular styles our customers have come to appreciate over the years. Our wide, high-quality selection makes it easier for every customer to find the right rug.
