Ghom silk rugs – The finest expression of Persian craftsmanship

Hogyan válhatott egy viszonylag fiatal szőnyegkészítő központ a világ egyik legismertebb nevévé? A Ghom selyemszőnyegek története a kivételes kézműves tudásról, a kreatív mintavilágról és a luxus új értelmezéséről szól.

The origins and characteristics of Ghom silk rugs

Ghom, also spelt Qom, is an Iranian city with a population of nearly half a million, located south of Tehran near Markazi Province. Although rug making is a relatively young tradition here, Ghom rugs quickly gained worldwide recognition for their quality and craftsmanship.

Ghom weavers do not rely on a single unified design tradition but work with an open and creative approach. They draw inspiration from the traditions of various Persian rug-making centres, then freely combine, reinterpret and refine these patterns. As a result, Ghom rugs often appear both classic and modern. Although they incorporate motifs from other regions, in Ghom these designs are executed with greater detail and fineness, often with silk highlights.

The knotting is exceptionally dense and precise, reaching between 950,000 and 1,400,000 knots per square metre. This places these pieces among the finest rugs in the world. The colour palette is remarkably rich, often featuring bold and contrasting combinations. Vivid pink, deep red and intense green are particularly characteristic of silk Ghom rugs. These colours may seem unusual to Western tastes, yet they give the rugs a distinctive character.

Ghom silk rugs are delicate, decorative pieces and are therefore best suited to formal, low-traffic rooms. They are not intended for everyday use, but rather as textile artworks that become the focal point of the space. They look particularly impressive in living rooms, reception areas, studies and elegant bedrooms.

They work especially well in clean, understated interiors where the rug can take centre stage. In modern settings, they create a striking contrast, while in classic interiors they blend harmoniously with the décor. Due to their delicate structure, they are better suited to gentle use and should be placed in areas without heavy foot traffic.

With suitable placement, Ghom silk rugs can retain their lustre and richly detailed patterns for many years. Over time, they may even develop an increasingly distinctive character.

The value and distinctive qualities of Ghom rugs

One of the greatest strengths of Ghom rugs is the precision of their hand craftsmanship and the use of silk, which gives the surface a distinctive lustre and texture. The natural sheen of the silk fibres makes the patterns appear almost alive, giving the rug a changing appearance under different lighting conditions.

These pieces often possess collector value, as their unique designs and high knot density mean they are regarded not only as interior furnishings but also as works of art. Ghom rugs therefore represent not only a modern branch of traditional Persian rug making, but also one of its finest and most sophisticated forms.
