- The first church built by humans, the Cave Church of St Peter, stands on the outskirts of ancient Antioch, now Antakya.
- Saint Nicholas, also known as Santa Claus, was born in Demre on Turkey’s Mediterranean coast.
- According to tradition, Noah’s Ark came to rest on Mount Ararat in eastern Turkey after the Great Flood.
- The Turks introduced the custom of drinking coffee to Europe. Coffee houses already existed in Istanbul in the 16th century.
- Istanbul is the only city in the world built across two continents.
- Julius Caesar’s famous words, “I came, I saw, I conquered” (Veni, vidi, vici), were spoken in what is now Turkey after he defeated the king of Pontus at the Battle of Zela.
