What you should know about clothes moths

Clothes moths pose a particular threat to household textiles, especially clothing and rugs made from natural fibres. Preventing and treating an infestation is therefore important.

Clothes moths do not actually eat clothes. In fact, once they become adults, they do not feed at all. They mate, the female lays her eggs, and then dies. It is the larvae that can damage rugs and clothing.

The clothes moth (Tineola bisselliella) has a rather short adult life. Once fully developed, its only purpose is to reproduce. After mating, the female lays her eggs and dies. Adult moths do not feed, so they pose no direct threat to clothing.

Adult clothes moths are harmless

The moth larvae, however, are far more destructive. They can obtain protein from almost any keratin-containing material, including clothing made from animal fibres. To survive, the tiny larvae can chew through a wide range of natural materials.

Their favourite foods include wool, cashmere, silk, cotton, linen, fur, feathers, all kinds of hair and lint, rugs, the bristles of hairbrushes and even pet hair. If the outer layer of a garment is not suitable for them, they may chew through it to reach an edible lining underneath. The materials consumed by the larvae can also become incorporated into their cocoons.

Unfortunately, these tiny pests are very difficult to eliminate. They can survive extreme temperatures for short periods, so temperatures of -8°C or +50°C may not be enough to kill them. However, exposure to these temperatures for at least half an hour can destroy them.
