The origins and characteristics of Heriz rugs
Heriz rugs originate from the mountainous region of north-western Iran, northeast of the city of Tabriz. They are woven in the village of Heriz on the slopes of Mount Sabalan, which has been renowned for centuries for its strong and durable Persian rugs.
One of the most important characteristics of Heriz rugs is their robust construction and exceptional durability. The warp is made from cotton, while the pile consists of high-quality, thick wool, made distinctive by the local environment. The area around Mount Sabalan is rich in copper deposits, and according to legend, trace elements in the soil and water contribute to the particularly resilient structure of the sheep’s wool. As a result, the wool used in Heriz rugs is harder and more resistant to wear than that found in many other Persian rugs.
Patterns and structural characteristics
The knot density typically ranges from 150,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre. Although this does not place them among the finest rugs, it provides excellent structural stability and a long lifespan. The designs are dominated by large geometric forms, with a central medallion surrounded by bold, angular motifs. These patterns are passed down through generations and are often woven from memory without the use of a design cartoon.
